We all want to be the best versions of ourselves, and working toward that end is really commendable! I believe that high expectations often are the drivers for some of the most successful people in the world, that their achievements are more often than not, based off of expectations they have of themselves, and those around them. However, there is a really dark side to these situations: chasing perfection.
Before I go any further, I have to say what you know I am going to say – You are never going to reach perfection – Now that that is out of the way, let’s get on with it.
Are you chasing perfection in your life? Chasing the perfect physique, diet, blood results? Or maybe you feel the need to be the perfect mom, hostess, and Pinterest DIY’er. Sometimes we get to a point where we are chasing after unrealistic expectations for so long, we are really just hurting ourselves. Then, before you know it, you are talking down to yourself and beating yourself up, or god-forbid something worse, for something you did really well!
Do you even know if you have realistic or unrealistic expectations of yourself and the circumstances of your life? Well, That is a very important question to address! Are there certain areas or topics you are unhappy with? Well address them logically and as objectively as you can. Here are a few great questions that can help you identify how realistic you are being:
- If this were someone else, would I have the same expectations?
- Is it attainable in the time/budget/access that you currently have?
- How (fast, well, cheap) has this been accomplished in the past by other people, by me?
Remember, sometimes we get so used to chasing perfections, that we forget it is unattainable. I want you to have high expectations, and drive to do the very best you can. But please, for the love of kale, don’t chase perfection until you go crazy trying. You deserve to be happy.
